Fashion as an Ongoing Conversation, Kavitha Balann Speaks

Fashion has always been in discussion—not just as an industry, but as a powerful form of self-expression and transformation. Much like Andy Sachs’ journey in The Devil Wears Prada, where style became a gateway into a new identity and confidence, fashion today continues to shape how individuals see themselves and show up in the world. In a recent chat with Kavitha Balann, a fashion and beauty digital creator, we explored how fashion goes beyond aesthetics and becomes something deeply personal and empowering.
Has fashion ever helped you step into a new version of yourself?
Yes, fashion has transformed me and my identity in so many ways. For me, fashion is a language. The way I dress says a lot about how I see myself and how I feel on the inside. There were phases in my life where I didn’t fully feel confident, but the moment I started dressing like the version of me I wanted to become, everything slowly shifted. It’s almost like I grew into my outfits. Over time, it didn’t feel like I was “trying” anymore it became who I am.

Do you dress differently depending on how you want to feel?
Yes, definitely. I dress based on how I want to feel that day. Whether I’m going for bold, cute, classy, or just simple and put together, my style changes a lot. But one thing about me I’ll still show up looking put together even on days I don’t feel my best. It’s my way of shifting my energy. It’s like I’m telling myself, “You’re still her,” no matter what mood I woke up in.

Can clothing shift your mindset in empowerment?
100%. You can literally feel the shift. The moment I put on something structured like a blazer, my posture changes, my energy changes I feel more in control. And on the other hand, if I stay in my at home clothes all day, I can feel myself slowing down or shrinking a bit. So yes, what you wear really does influence how you show up. Personally, I love wearing blazers on days I feel a little off it instantly brings me back into that confident, boss energy.
What makes an outfit feel empowering rather than just beautiful?
For me, it’s not just about how it looks it’s about how it feels. You can wear the trendiest outfit and still feel disconnected from it. Empowerment comes from feeling comfortable and aligned with what you’re wearing. The way you style (your outfit), the effort you put into your look it all reflects how you see yourself. I truly believe that when you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows. At the end of the day, you wear the outfit, not the other way around.

At the end of the day, fashion is less about following rules and more about having fun with who you’re becoming. As Kavitha Balann shows, every outfit is a chance to shift your mood, own your energy, and step into your main character moment—because just like in The Devil Wears Prada, sometimes all it takes is the right look to remind you exactly who you are.
